School programs
Bar U Ranch National Historic Site
Delivered by Parks Canada interpreters, our curriculum-aligned school programs offer place-based learning through hands-on demonstrations, lively interpreter-led talks, sensory experiences, and outdoor hikes.

Each activity is delivered in dynamic 30-minute segments designed to inspire curiosity and connection. Interpreters adapt to the individual needs of the students' grade levels for each group.
Students will explore the blacksmith shop, harness repair shop, saddlehorse barn, and other historic treasures, discovering over 140 years of ranching life, culture, and tradition.
Select three experiences for your Bar U school program:
- Cookhouse: Discover how the ranch stayed self sufficient throughout the decades. The cookhouse, garden, root cellar, and storage sheds are featured in this experience.
- Take a hike: Trek along the banks of Pekisko Creek and learn about riparian ecology and rangeland management to help support important ecosystems.
- Art of roping: Students learn how to handle a lariat and throw a real lasso! A hands-on experience of techniques used to handle cattle out on the range.
- Blacksmithing: Students watch a blacksmithing demonstration and learn how metal is manipulated the old-fashioned way! Learn how blacksmiths shoed horses, repaired tools, and forged hardware for buildings and wagons.
Self-guided visits
Explore the grounds and historic buildings at your own pace. Discover ranching history brought to life by our costumed interpreters. Students can complete various activities using the provided Xplorers adventure page.
Stretch your legs and explore the Pekisko Creek trail! Discover a less-visited area of the ranch and take in the sounds of the creek, enjoy shaded picnic spots, and stunning mountain views.
