Vive les Voyageurs

All grades. French-Canadian specialized program. Francophone, French Immersion, and Anglophone classes — all are welcome.

Immerse your students in a French-Canadian cultural experience at our 19th century Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. Participate in fun learning activities, taste maple taffy and learn about French-Canadian music with the spoon and jig.

Teacher information

• This exclusive program is offered for two weeks only. If these programs are fully booked but if you would like to be added to a wait list, send us an email at ftl.schoolbookings@pc.gc.ca     
  • Please do not register with your personal information. You must register using your work email and phone number, along with the school’s address and postal code.
• Available to grade 3-5 and all French levels: Francophone, French Immersion, and Anglophone classes.
• Fees
• Capacity: Two class maximum per school (up to 60 people)
• Adult chaperones: Minimum four adults required per booking
• Parking: Complimentary parking is provided for teachers and accompanying chaperones. To receive free parking, please register your vehicle at the Visitor Centre upon arrival
• Offered dates: April 13–15 and April 20–22, 2027, from 10 am to 12 pm.
• Language: Available in English or French
• Please ensure that all schools have a fair chance to participate in our programs; give us at least a two weeks notice of any cancellations, so that we may offer the time slot to another class.

How the program works

• Your class will be divided into four groups, supervised by a parent volunteer or teacher.
• In groups, you will rotate through four 30-minute stations.
  • Rope weaving: An interactive station where students will learn the method of weaving a voyageur sash, while dancing to music.
  • Voyageur program: Students will learn about the voyageurs and their canoe voyages.
  • Plant walk: 
    • Students will take a walk through our native plant garden and discover how the plants were used by the local First Nations for nutritional and medicinal purposes.
  • Maple taffy:
    • Fort staff will be demonstrating maple taffy on ice, one stick per child is included in admission.

Preparing for your visit

• Divide your student list into groups of 10-15 students, 4 groups max. Assign an adult chaperone to each group.
• Programs run rain or shine, so dress for the weather.
• To assist us in delivering the best experience for your students, encourage adult leaders to model active listening, to silence cell phones, and take necessary phone calls or conversations with other parents away from the programs that are in progress.

When you arrive

• Check in 5 minutes prior to your scheduled program time.
• Pay for your field trip using credit card or school cheque, written out to the Receiver General for Canada.
• Adult chaperones are required at all times while exploring the fort and Visitor Centre.

Washrooms and lunch facilities

• Washrooms are located in the Visitor Centre and the Operations Building.
• Outdoor picnic areas and shelters are available for lunch.
