Advancing ocean knowledge
Gulf Islands National Park Reserve
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is part of a global network of interconnected waters that sustain life on Earth. Oceans contain 97% of Earth’s water and regulate the weather and climate, absorb carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen, making them essential to the planet’s well-being.
At Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, the marine monitoring program deepens our understanding of the ocean’s influence on us and of our impact on the ocean. By studying marine ecosystems and the diverse species they support, from tiny clams to the largest cetaceans, Parks Canada can better understand and protect these ecosystems.
Currently, two projects contribute to ocean knowledge in the national park reserve:

Southern Resident Killer Whale Research Project
