Point Pelee National Park

Get to know the National Park in your own backyard! Have fun with your class at Point Pelee while enjoying a hike around the boardwalk, exploring the park’s Visitor Centre, including a showing of the 9-minute introductory film, and of course, a trip to the Tip! Guided programs are available at different outdoor locations depending on the time of year. You’ll find a full list of guided experiences for Grades JK to 12 below.

Grade 3-6: Life in a Great Lakes Marsh

Offered in June

60 to 90 minutes

Point Pelee’s marsh is teeming with life! Let us show your class how each plant and animal is perfectly adapted to living in a wet environment. Students will become nature detectives looking for evidence of life in the marsh. As they tour the 1 km boardwalk with a park interpreter, they will have the chance to see, touch, and smell the life around them. From the safety of a stable platform they’ll participate in an exciting water activity while searching for bugs. They’ll hunt for turtles, find carnivorous plants and listen for animals hiding in the cattails.

Grade 7-8: People and the Park

Offered in June

60 to 90 minutes

People have played a great role in shaping Point Pelee. We’ll take your class on a hike through history at the DeLaurier Homestead and Trail from the first people to call Point Pelee home to our modern day relationship with the park. After the hike, students will grab a GPS unit and explore on their own, learning about the environmental impacts people have had on the park.

Grades 9-12: Mapping and Monitoring

Offered in April and October

Technology is an important tool scientists use to monitor the health of ecosystems at Point Pelee National Park.  Join us and find out first-hand how GIS and GPS have become vital components of our monitoring program.

Part 1 - Ecosystem Monitoring

1.5 hours

Students will join a park interpreter and venture out to the savannah on West Beach. While learning about this rare habitat, students will use GPS units to map species in a monitoring plot. Once completed, they will return to the Visitor Centre to upload and map their results, using GIS ArcReader, just like the park’s resource conservation staff.

Part 2 - Geocaching

1.5 hours
GPS is not just a useful tool for ecosystem monitoring, it is also widely used for recreational purposes. Armed with GPS units, students will navigate park trails to find 6 geocaches and learn more about the park’s restoration efforts along the way.
