Harvesting in Rouge National Urban Park

Rouge National Urban Park

For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have maintained longstanding connection to the lands and waters of what we now call Rouge National Urban Park. The harvesting of plants, wildlife and other natural materials have long sustained these communities in ways of ceremony, medicine and sustenance.

Indigenous harvesting is a constitutionally protected right under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, and continues to be an important element of culture, knowledge and stewardship that has been passed down between generations. At Rouge National Urban Park, First Nations right-holders and Parks Canada are working together in collaboration to support the continuation of these practices while prioritizing public safety and ecological integrity.
