The Architect: Secrets of the Forest

Rouge National Urban Park

A glimpse behind the scenes as Leo and Taviss build their own dam.

Why are beavers so important to our ecosystems? Find out in a special episode of TVOkids’ Eco-Adventures Across Canada called The Architect: Secrets of the Forest, filmed right here in Rouge National Urban Park!

This 11-minute episode features Rouge National Urban Park ecologist Leonardo Cabrera alongside TVOKids host Taviss. Together, they invite viewers young and old to discover the remarkable world of beavers, nature’s master builders. As Cabrera teaches Taviss how to build her own dam, viewers learn how beavers shape their environment by constructing dams and lodges that create ponds and wetlands. These aquatic habitats support a wide range of plant and animal life, from frogs and fish to waterfowl and native wetland vegetation. Viewers will also explore how beavers contribute to water filtration, climate regulation and even flood reduction, making them key allies to healthy ecosystems.

Rouge National Urban Park ecologist Leonardo Cabrera joins TVOKids to talk about the secret world of beavers.

Leo Cabrera, who is usually out in the field more than he is on a film set, had a blast behind the scenes. His favorite moment was when he and Taviss were searching for debris and constructing their dam with sticks at Little Rouge Creek. They watched the water gather, forming a small pond, just like a beaver would create! It was a unique learning experience for Cabrera to work with Taviss, producer Melissa Peters and the rest of the film and sound team. He was thoroughly impressed with how well the young host was able to recall her script word-for-word and how comfortable she was on camera at such a young age.

Did you know? Beavers don’t just use twigs to build dams… they also eat them!

Rouge National Urban Park is home to a variety of ecosystems including wetlands, streams and forests, and beavers play a vital role in keeping them healthy. Despite its urban surroundings, Canada’s first national urban park is remarkably biodiverse, providing a home to a vast array of plant and animal species including many that are at risk in Ontario and Canada.

As Cabrera and Taviss search for a beaver dam in the wild, the pair highlight how Parks Canada promotes beaver conservation through human-wildlife coexistence efforts. Along with public education and outreach, Parks Canada supports beaver populations through science-based monitoring, habitat protection and adaptive flood management strategies. These efforts help ensure beavers can thrive in their natural environment and in close proximity to our communities.

For Cabrera, the most important message he hoped to convey to young viewers through this episode was how beavers positively contribute to ecological balance and change, benefiting biodiversity, ecosystems and people. He also wanted to showcase Parks Canada's commitment to caring for and coexisting with beavers through education and science-based solutions in Rouge National Urban Park.

Explore the hidden world of this iconic species and discover how Parks Canada is working to protect beavers and their habitats.
