Volunteer
Prince Albert National Park
Volunteering is a great way of giving back to national parks. Hands on or behind-the–scenes, there’s an opportunity waiting for you!
Adopt-a-Patch
Do you live in Waskesiu Lake or visit Prince Albert National Park often? Do you want to contribute to the conservation of the park? Become a habitat hero and help protect the park from invasive plants (weeds)!
Prince Albert National Park is looking for volunteers who are willing to Adopt-a-Patch and visit several times throughout the summer. Parks Canada specialists will work with you to provide training so that you are confident while volunteering. Once trained, you will volunteer independently at your adopted patch in the Waskesiu townsite throughout the summer as your time permits.
Requirements:
- Complete training to develop competence in plant identification, mechanical weed control, and safety procedures, as well as communication skills for when curious visitors chat with you.
- Availability throughout the summer to visit and work in your adopted patch
- Willingness to wear Parks Canada branded volunteer clothing
Volunteer duties:
- Visit the adopted route or patch multiple times to mechanically control weeds. This could include cutting or pulling weeks, digging out entire plants with roots, or cutting and bagging flowers and seedheads
- Fill out weed control forms when you work independently in your patch. This can be done electronically through an app
- Use safety equipment provided and follow safety procedures
Know a friend who would be interested in volunteering with you? You can sign up as a small group to share the duties!
Saskatchewan Breeding Bird Atlas
Enhance your next bird watching experience at Prince Albert National Park and survey breeding birds for the Saskatchewan Breeding Bird Atlas. Become a volunteer citizen scientist, and help assess how changes in the landscape affect wild bird habitats and populations. Your participation in the Saskatchewan Breeding Bird Atlas will contribute to an open access comprehensive digital account of the status of breeding birds in Saskatchewan.
Canadian Lakes Loon Survey
Volunteer and help monitor the health of Prince Albert National Park lakes and loon populations across the country!
The presence of breeding loons can be an indication of lakes with high fish productivity and water quality and low levels of toxins and human disturbance. A decline in loon populations may be an early indication of larger problems within a lake ecosystem.
Since 1996 Parks Canada has been monitoring loon populations in the park. The park shares its loon survey data with the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey. Started in 1981 by Bird Studies Canada, the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey monitors loon hatching and survival rates across Canada.
There are 12 survey locations located throughout Prince Albert National Park. If you are planning a trip and would like to explore one of these lakes during the months of June, July or August you can help us collect important loon survey information.
